Ilsenburg Abbey - a Royal Foundation

The history of Ilsenburg Abbey was always closely associated with the history of the Bishopric of Halberstadt and the reforming aspirations of its bishops, especially in the 11th and 12th centuries, as well as with the Counts of Wernigerode as their advocates. This abbey was assigned to the bishops: after all, its appurtenances had been a personal gift to Bishop Arnolf from King Heinrich II.
